Geothermal Institutions
Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) – the state electricity generator of Costa Rica, responsible for electricity production from all sources, including geothermal.
Geothermal Projects/Programs
The projects/programmes supported by other partners to promote geothermal development in Latin America, including in Costa Rica can be found HERE.
JICA - Costa Rica Cooperation Initiative - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has supported geothermal development in Costa Rica through the provision of an Official Development Assistance (ODA).
Legal and Regulatory Framework
The Geothermal Law (Law No. 5961 of 1976), give the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) responsibility over all activities concerning geothermal energy. ICE is authorized to acquire all land required for research, exploration, exploitation and protection of geothermal resources. The Ministry of Environment and Energy is working on a bill for allowing geothermal direct use that will be presented to the Legislative Assembly in 2021.
